Signs That You Need Roof Repair

Roof Repair

Roof repairs – the one thing that we tend to delay until it is too late; it is kind of like going to the dentist. We wait until it becomes visibly obvious that we need to get it fixed, and when we finally call the experts, the situation has increased exponentially. Typically, the life-span of a roof on average is 20 years, but it still depends on the materials as well as the harshness of the weather conditions. Either way, there are a few universal signs when it comes to roof repairs. If you are wondering whether or not your roof needs fixing, check to see if any of these signs are visible/happening:

  • Cracked, curled or missing shingles – when the shingles are close to their ‘expiration date’, as a result of prolonged usage they are cracked, curled or some may be missing. In this case, you should at least consider a consultation with an expert.
  • Dark, wet, dirty, moldy shingles – another great sign that the shingles are at the end of their life span is when they are allowing moisture to be trapped; if there are any signs of them keeping moisture for prolonged time, even though there wasn’t any rain/snow recently or even worse if your roof is covered in moss or algae, mold, your shingles can no longer protect your home and you need to replace them.
  • Shingles started to shed – If you have composite or asphalt shingles and you notice that you keep on finding dark granules in your gutters that means that your shingles began to shed and it is time that you grab the phone and arrange for them to be repaired.

  • Roof is damaged due to storm/other unfortunate events – if recently there was a storm or other unfortunate weather disaster and it affected the area of your home and your home, even if it is just in one or two spots due to fallen branch, you should consider calling a professional to properly assess the situation and identify all of the damage. They will let you know further what changes you need to make.
  • Water staining on the walls and ceiling – whenever there are any water stains or discoloration on your ceiling or walls the most probable result is that something is not working on your rooftop. It could be that some shingles have been moved, or your roof underlayment is broken; either way, these are not things that will get solved on their own so you need to take precautionary measures.
  • Leaks or presence of outside light in the attic – unless it comes from the window, your attic should not have sunray ‘stains’ on its wall or floor. If you during the day notice that the sun is ‘peaking’ into your home through the roof, you need to consider repair instantly. This is because these ‘innocent’ sun leaks will turn into a full-blown water leak the next time it rains or snows. Therefore, you should call an expert to localize and fix these minor issues and avoid any potential bigger one which further down the road may even lead to full roof replacement.
