Flow Meters Versus Water Meters – A Comparison Guide

It is surprising how many individuals use the terms flow meters and water meters interchangeably, with the common misconception that they are one and the same. Though every water meter is a flow meter, however, not every flow meter is a water meter. The quick and dirty dissimilarity is that a water meter gauges the volume of water as it goes by the meter and a flow meter gauges the speed at which the water goes by the meter.

Working

There are several diverse subcategories of ultrasonic, electromagnetic, and mechanical water and flow meters, but all of them include the following four fundamental elements:

  • A display that shows the reading of the meter.
  • A counter that tracks the volume of water that runs through the sensor. The counter maps the pulsations sent through the meter to decide volume and/or speed of flow.
  • A transducer that changes and sends out the flow signal.
  • A sensor that becomes aware of the water flow.

Additional Differences Between A Flow Meter & Water Meter

  • The precision of a flow meter is reliant on linearity, i.e., the capability of staying within the designed limits of the meter, and repeatability, i.e., constantly delivering similar results when the measurements are carried out under similar circumstances. Linearity and repeatability are not essential in water meters that make use of the low and high range measurements mentioned below.
  • A water meter is always quantified by two precisions, a low range and a high range measurement. The average between the two measurements decides the right reading.
  • A flow meter is utilized in a wider range of screening circumstances. For instance, in gas-based applications it is essential to have a flow meter that constantly gauges the flow of gas with the aim of becoming aware of blockages and leaks, either of which can have deadly results.

While both water and flow meters are the same in appearance and design, there are simply means to distinguish between them.
